2010 Men and
Women's Journeys |
|
![]() It has been a very challenging season for both the men and women in 2010. Both play not only in one of the top Regions in the state, but also one of the top Districts as shown by the state rankings. In addition, both teams play a challenging schedule outside of those games. The goal is to advance to Regions and beyond, and enjoy this journey. To this end, it was a highly successful season. Playing great in Districts allowed both to advance to egions. The boys took on highly ranked Oldham County, who had edged the boys earlier that year on their home pitch. A back and forth game, Oldham took a 1-0 lead before half. The men pressed on and had several chances to equalize but Oldham is not considered a possible state champion for no reason. Late in the game the men pushed everyone forward seeking a goal and nearly got it. Oldham took advantage of this and scored a second goal with less than a minute to ice it. Its always sad to finish, especially for the seniors, but what a great season. The Bluegrass Games, Colonel Classic, Donley Classic, CAL and Ballard battles were great to watch as this team grew. Thanks to Coaches Hawes, Rullan and Gillum! |
![]() The ladies trek was very similar to the boys. Early scrimmages, Bluegrass games, extremely difficult schedule forged bonds for this fine young ladies which would prove crucial in the post season. Perhaps the highlight was the LONG overtime victory over rival Ballard ensuring advancement to Regions. However, like the men they faced a buzzsaw in Oldham County. Playing hard throughout the game, the ladies would not quit. A bounce here or there and things could have been different. Oldham County is a great team and deserved their victory. Coaches Mozejko and Holm transformed this team from day 1 into a solid team who worked very hard for each other. Thanks to the Seniors Kara Covert, Rachel Harrower, Alexis McFadden, Emily Reid, Becca Wiemann, and Sara Williamson for all of their contributions. |

Men Head to Oldham County for Region 8 Battle ![]() On 10/12, two top 15 teams went at it first with Ballard prevailing over CAL 1-0. That's the nature of great soccer in the Louisville / Oldham area, great teams get knocked out (ie Manual over Male). Next Eastern hosted ranked KCD. KCD had topped the Eagles in a rain shortened game earlier so EHS was looking for revenge. It was a close contest the whole way, great defense and goal tending (Chay Smithson!!!) from both sides. When the final whistle came a Penalty Kick blasted by Ryan Whatley was the difference. Two nights later it was the Championship versus the top ranked team in the state, Ballard. Ballard had edged the Eagles 2-1 earlier in the year. Both teams had chances as they carefully probed while trying not to give an opening. However, the Bruins got on the scoreboard first. The Eagle Men would not back down as they soon equalized to make it 1-1. Chances both ways in this great battle including the Eagles banging one off the post. Ballard broke away to take the lead 2-1 and with just 3 minutes left it looked dire for Eastern. However this team has never quit and would not tonight. With a minute left they again evened the score to send it to overtime. Once again their were quality chances both ways but again Ballard went up in the second OT period and held on. Congratulations Ballard. Great news though: both Ballard and EHS will advance to Region 8 at Oldham County. The Eagles look for revenge against Oldham County at 7:45pm Monday 10/18 at Oldham County. Great job Men!!! For the Region 8 bracket, CLICK HERE Pre-Districts Pasta Party 10/11 Monday Night October 11 The Varsity Men are invaded the Moriarty's for some team
building and tasty pasta. As in the past, several
players decided to sit in the barber's chair to get fired up
for Districts. Buzz cuts for many, Avatar cut for at
least one, and one interesting dye job will give the team an
interesting look this week. No one went for he Friar
Tim Tebow look he adopted for the Broncos...but the
underclassmen can consider that for next year! GO EAGLES!!! |
Lady
Eagles Back to CAL for Region 8 Challenge ![]() Tuesday October 12 the Lady Eagles took the short ride to CAL to take on talented rival Ballard. They had split during the year so bragging rights were at stake. As expected, it was a hotly contested game from the first whistle until the very end. After regulation and OT, the score stood at 0-0. Fans were not at the edge of their seats, they were standing as the Penalty Kick Shootout began...and went on...and on. Finally EHS scored for an incredible 10-9 shootout win (Officially scored as 1-0 victory). The Finals were Thursday October 14 at 8pm versus CAL. CAL has a great team but the ladies battled and had their chances. However, when the game ended CAL was on top 3-0. No worries, both CAL and EHS will advance to Region 8 Tournament again at CAL. The Lady Eagles take on tough Oldham County at 8pm Tuesday 10/19. Great job ladies!!! Boys win Donley Classic The Eagle men have played a tough, tough schedule. Having played 6 of the top 12 teams in
the State including top ranked St X, their goal is to
gain the necessary experience to battle through their
difficult District and Region. Adding away
tournaments on unfriendly turf further toughens them.
This past weekend they traveled to Madisonville North
Hopkins to participate in the Donley Classic. Taking on
22nd ranked Henderson County, the men quickly took a 1-0
lead with Kasey Mitchell blasting in a left footed shot
with a nice low cross from Kody Rhines. "Hendo"
later equalized and both teams pushed for the game
winner. Strong defensive play from Morgan Hahnert,
Spencer Zwenger, Brandon Hall and Keeper Chay Smithson
preserved the draw. Captains Ryan Moriarty, Josh Wedding, and Matias
Arambaru all had solid games controlling the midfield
with underclassmen Michael Bryer and Marcello Petroni
chipping in. Next the boys took on host Madison North Hopkins
who literally seconds into the game raced to a 1-0 lead.
However the Eagle Men did not panic and steadily battled
back to an eventual 5-2 victory. Among the scorers:
Kasey Mitchell, Ryan Whatley, Beau Laufer, Will Carpenter.
It was a total team effort as the team strung pass after
pass together. Trevor Speer, John Bruno, Michael
Ydoate Alex Shacklette, and Austin Sandberg had strong
games for the Eagles. After a series of tie breakers it was determined Eastern
edged out Lexington Catholic to bring home the hardware.
Special thanks to the tournament hosts Madisonville
North Hopkins for their a terrific atmosphere and
hospitality!
The Eagles has three named to the All-Tournament Team: Kasey Mitchell,
Brandon Hall and Kody Rhines. |
Recent Lady Eagles Results
for 2010 Fresh from playing in the tough Bulldog Cup, Eastern traveled to Ballard for the yearly district battle with their talented
cross-town
rival. Coach Mozejko’s Lady Eagles and the Lady
Bruins staged a
defensive battle in the first half probing for any opportunity to take an early lead. With less than
one minute left in the first half, Ballard fouled Eastern just
outside the box. Charlotte Pruett carefully eyed this
chance and placed a shot similar to the goal against Male to
find the back of
the net. Eastern
continued with solid defense in the second half to protect
the lead. However, with less than 3 minutes to go Ballard tied the
score with a great shot just outside of the reach of a
diving Emily Reed. The game ended with a 1-1 draw
leaving the upcoming district rematch to decide bragging
rights for
2010. Next up, the always emotional Senior Night vs Waggoner.
We have to honor these fine young ladies for their
contributions on and off the field. Thanks to Eastern
Seniors Alexis McFadden, Emily Reed, Rachel Harrower, Kara
Covert, Becca Wiemann and Sara Williamson!!! Vowing to
give the Seniors a night to remember, the Lady Eagles pushed
from the first whistle. Jordan Gregory opened the
scoring for Eastern, followed by Emily Reed. Usually
playing the tough position of keeper, this was her first goal at
Eastern. The scoring continued with goals by Savannah Gregorchik, Alison Scheynost, Hannah Goodman, two by Sara
Williamson, Emily Boggess, Morgan Wyman, Mackenzie Head and
finally Jordan Gregory.
The final score
was 11-1. |
