Eastern Girls Edged in Overtime at Districts
Teammates ForeverGame 1 Foe Familiar: Ballard Bruins

The Eastern Eagles Girls team battled through a tough district the entire year. Hovering around the .500 mark most of the season, the Lady Footballers put together a five game winning streak heading into Districts. Facing a familiar foe, Ballard, they knew whoever won would have to give 110% and then some.
Eastern had shown lots of promise throughout the season with many strong games. They started the season off well defeating an always tough Shelby County team 2 - 0. Their schedule was as difficult a schedule as you would find in the State. They lost by one goal to North Oldham, Oldham Country, and Assumption, three top teams.
The girls did have decisive victories over Jeffersontown, Mercy, Kentucky Country Day, Seneca, Atherton, Fern Creek and Butler.  In addition, they had won a hard fought 2 - 1 victory over the Male Bulldogs.
During the regular season, the Lady Eagles had split with Ballard. Both games were somewhat lopsided one time for Eastern, and one time for the Bruins. Coach Lunja knew literally anything could happen in their third meeting. He was sure both teams would come ready to play and he would need Senior leadership to help the younger players step up.
It was a back and forth game, with both teams having chances to pull away. However, when regulation time had ended, it was all even. Eastern had a few opportunities in the Overtime to take the lead but just could not convert. Finally Ballard broke through with a scoring chance and pulled ahead. The Lady Eagles did not give up and nearly got the equalizer but it was not meant to be.
It was a tough loss and difficult way to end the season but we can all be proud of the 4 Seniors. Amanda Blanchard, Ali Schatz, Alex Shull, and Laura Wittenburg were terrific leaders and will be missed.

Final Score: Ballard 3 Eastern 2 OT
