Appetizer: Eastern JV Boys 1 Ballard 0
It's not just the Varsity Footballers that get fired up for
“The Ballard Game”. Coach Gillum’s troops were stoked to travel
to Ballard for the annual regular season battle. The Sophomores
and Juniors had a taste of this rivalry. For the Freshman, this
was a new experience. However, the entire team performed like
veterans as they controlled the game from the start. The Ballard
JV team had several chances but the Eagles stopped them and
created more. Shots were going off the posts and crossbar for
the Eagles and for a while, it seemed like bad luck would
control the day. Just as the JV Bruins thought fate was on their
side, Marshal LeVere attacked with a fury and put the boys up 1 - 0.
The Eagles continued to press for a larger advantage but to
Ballard's credit, their defense held. When the game ended,
the Eastern JV's solid D and Goalkeeping were enough to preserve
the shutout, setting the table for the Varsity.
Next Comes the Main Course:
Eastern Varsity Boys 2 Ballard 0
Having enjoyed the JV game and wet their own appetite, the
Eagles took the field ready to play. The momentum from the
earlier game continued as Eastern again controlled play from the
first whistle. The Varsity Bruins have a solid skilled team and
were able to create an array of offensive opportunities.
However, the back line played their usual solid game and kept
the sheet clean. As the game progressed, the shots increased
from the Eagle Strikers and finally Adam Stringer lit the
scoreboard for a 1-0 halftime lead. Ballard pressed for
opportunities to knot the game but again, the D shut them down.
Finally, the Adam Emig found space and hammered in a second
goal. This game the Eagles a much needed cushion. Ballard
showed why they are highly respected in the state and played
hard until the end making the Eagles earn the victory.
Dessert: Middletown Dairy Queen
The next day at the Eastern Campus, both
boys teams were still reveling in the Ballard Sweep when an
announcement came over the Intercom. Please report to the
Cafeteria. Arriving, they discovered Principal Sexton and
a bus and they were off the DQ. It was over 90 degrees outside
but all the Eagles saw were Blizzards. They say Victory is
Sweet...the Ballard Victories were doubly sweet.
